History:
One of Costa Rica’s premier botanical gardens, the Lankester Botanical Garden, is found on the outskirts of Cartago in Costa Rica. It has a history almost as old as the country itself. The garden was established in 1933 as a project of Charles H. Lankester, an English Botanist and horticulturist who moved to Costa Rica in 1899. Lankester collected plants from all over the country, especially from the highlands of Costa Rica and Southern Mexico. His collection of species started to become so large that he began to seek out public land to plant them. The garden was originally planted on a five-acre parcel of land owned by the municipality of Cartago. The Cartago government granted Lankester permission to use the land, and he quickly set about creating an ever growing botanical garden. His meticulous care enabled the garden to stay in its current form. In 1948, the government of Costa Rica granted Lankester the necessary permits to continue running his garden. In 1951, the garden was formally converted into a research center by the government and became known as the Centro Cientifico Tropical (CCT). Since then, the Lankester Botanical Garden has grown to be one of the premier botanical gardens in Costa Rica. It now covers approximately 20 acres and consists of over 12,000 species of plants, representing 470 families. The garden contains important collections of orchids, medicinal plants, conifers, cycads and bromeliads, and many other plants from across the country. The garden has since become a destination for scientists and ecotourists alike, providing educational tours for the public. The garden is also home to various conservation and research projects, including conservation of threatened plant species. Today, the Lankester Botanical Garden is a must-see destination for those wishing to experience the unique flora of Costa Rica. Not only is it a site rich in biodiversity, its rich history makes it one of the most interesting places to visit in the country.
