History:
The Cocos Island located in the Pacific Ocean about 550 km (340mi) off the mainland of western Costa Rica, was discovered by Spanish sailor Juan Cabezas in 1526. It was named “Isla de Coco” for the wild coconut palms found there. The island was uninhabited when Cabezas arrived. In 1804, Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk and his loyal sidekick, Pedro, broke into the remote island. Selkirk was the first to settle Cocos Island, establishing a small wrangler’s camp. Not long after, four-hundred men made their way onto the island, all vying for the honor of being the first to land. The island quickly became a popular stop for pirates, whalers, and merchants trading between Panama and the Pacific coast. It was mainly used as a hideout for convoys of massive ships, and the wrangler’s camp simply grew along with the island’s reputation. In 1827, the Costa Rican government declared Cocos Island an official protectorate. A lighthouse was installed in 1875 for the purpose of guiding sea vessels, and a station was established to collect taxes from visiting ships. In 1929, Cocos Island was officially declared a national park to prevent deforestation of its dense forests. Today, the island remains a nature reserve and is known as one of the top dive sites in the world. It is a popular destination for ecotourism, extreme sports, and underwater exploration. The waters surrounding the island are also home to a number of endangered species, including hammer head sharks, manta rays, and sea turtles.
