History:

Yoho National Park is located in the Canadian Rockies in British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1886, Yoho was the second of four national parks that were created in the Rocky Mountains by the Canadian government. Before European settlers arrived, the area that is now Yoho was home to the Shuswap, Kootenai, and Stoney Nakoda First Nations people. These groups used the area’s resources such as fish, berries, and animals and had spiritual connections to the land and waterways. After European settlers established trading posts, traders explored the area, making use of various routes. This included the southern trade route, which followed the Kicking Horse River and eventually went through Field, BC in what is now Yoho National Park. In 1886, the Canadian government set aside 3,000 square kilometres of land around the Kicking Horse River to officially create Yoho National Park. They named it after a Cree word, “yoho”, which means awe and wonder. Since then, the park has grown to encompass more than 1,100 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, including mountains, glaciers, forests, rivers, and lakes.
