Richardson International Airport (IATA: YWG, ICAO: CYWG) is an international airport serving Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It is the seventh busiest airport in the country and the sixth busiest in terms of aircraft movements. The airport was first established in 1928 as a base for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The first civilian flights to Winnipeg began in 1931. Following the Second World War, the airport grew rapidly and was eventually renamed to its current name, honouring former Prime Minister John George Diefenbaker. The first major expansion of the airport took place in 1961 with the opening of a new passenger terminal. Further expansions occurred in the 1970s and 80s, including the opening of an international terminal and the expansion of existing facilities. By the early 2000s, the airport had become one of the busiest airports in the country, and began to experience major congestion issues.
