History:

Santiago de Huari is a town and municipality located in the province of Guanay, the northernmost province in the La Paz Department of Bolivia. It is situated on the north bank of the Beni River, about 100km south of the departmental capital of La Paz. The town of Santiago de Huari was founded in 1787 by the Jesuit missionary Joseph Serrano. It was initially part of Peruvian territory, but in 1841 it was incorporated into the recently formed Republic of Bolivia. Santiago de Huari was initially a rural settlement, but in the 20th century it became an important port for the transportation of Bolivian agricultural products such as cotton, sugarcane, and soybeans to other parts of the country and abroad. This made the town relatively prosperous, though the infrastructure still lags behind other Bolivian towns of similar size. Since the 1950s, Santiago de Huari has become increasingly urbanized.
