History:

Valle Alto (Upper Valley) is located in the western part of Cochabamba in the department of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Once part of the Incan Empire, it was an important agricultural area. In the 16th century, it was the political and administrative center of the region, and was later incorporated into the colonial system. This region was also the site of several successful and unsuccessful uprisings against Spanish colonial rule. After independence, Valle Alto was one of the many areas that suffered from the rule of successive dictators. Political turmoil followed in the early 20th century, during which time Valle Alto was occupied by the Chilean army following the Chaco War. In the 1950s, Valle Alto was subject to a period of violent revolution as the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR) was formed in 1953 to unite the area under one government. The MNR was successful in overthrowing the long-lasting dictatorship in the wake of the 1952 revolution, taking control of both the Bolivian army and the government. Valle Alto then experienced economic growth that spurred more agricultural and industrial development, as well as more political stability. In the 1980s, Valle Alto was subject to the worst effects of economic crisis and hyperinflation in Bolivia. Public protests by the indigenous population led to an acceptance of some of their demands, eventually resulting in a new constitution in December 2009. Today, Valle Alto remains a politically stable region and an agricultural region with a diverse population. The area is still proud of deep-rooted traditions such as folklore, music, and dance.
