History:

Laguna Colorada, known in English as Red Lagoon, is a shallow salt lake located in the southwest of the altiplano region of Bolivia. The lake is situated within the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. It was declared a Ramsar site in 2014, making it an important wetland for multiple species, including migratory birds, felts, and flamingos. The lake is known for its intense reddish-orange colour, caused by abundant algae, sediments, and occasional red pigmentation in the water. Laguna Colorada sits at an elevation of 4,278 meters (14,041 feet) above sea level and is roughly 875 hectares (2,160 acres) in size. The nearby Ollague Volcano constantly supplies minerals to the lake, leading to seasonal variations in the colour and clarity of the water. The lake was once part of a much larger laguna, but it has since been split by shifting sediment banks. There are also several nearby hot springs that are inhabited by wild flamingos and other birds. This area has historically been of spiritual importance to local communities and there have been archaeological discoveries that suggest human presence in the region as far back as 10,000 years ago. Despite the area’s ecological importance, it has suffered from overgrazing and pollution, leading to the endangerment of some of its animal and plant species. In order to protect the area’s biodiversity, management and conservation efforts have been put in place to reduce the negative effects of human activity and restore the area’s natural balance.
