Santa Cruz de la Sierra is one of the oldest cities in Bolivia. It was founded in 1561 by the Spanish conquistador Álvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca. He named it after Santa Cruz, the patron saint of his hometown of Santander in Spain.
