History:

Parque Nacional Carrasco was first established in 1991, as part of a larger effort to protect a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna found in the Bolivian Yungas. The park is located at the edge of the Andean foothills in the province of Oriente, in the departments of Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. It covers 63,679 hectares, with elevations ranging from 600 to almost 3,000 meters above sea level. The park is named in honor of Bolivian statesman José María Carrasco Gutierrez who fought for land reform during the 19th century. Parque Nacional Carrasco provides a home to an impressive array of both flora and fauna. It is home to 1,260 species of plants, including such unique and rare species as the Chilean Anacahuita (Fabcea Chiliensis) and the Redwood tree (Cedrasea spectabilis) which grows at an elevation of 2,700 meters. The park is also home to endangered animals such as the black spider monkey, and to more common native species such as tapirs and armadillos. Parque Nacional Carrasco is also a federally protected archaeological zone. Some of the artifacts discovered in the park date back to 3500 BC, and research has further revealed the presence of pre-Incan civilizations in the area.
