History:

Cochabamba is the second most populous department in Bolivia. The city was founded in 1571 by the Spanish conquistador Diego de Almagro. Since its inception, Cochabamba has experienced steady growth and the population of the historic city now surpasses 900,000. For most of its colonial history, Cochabamba was governed by the Spanish crown. After the Bolivian independence in 1824, Cochabamba became one of the capitals of Bolivia, alternating with La Paz. The 19th century brought with it extensive economic and cultural development, especially in the Cochabamba Valley. Agriculture became central to the economy, with wheat, potatoes, and quinoa for export. The growth of the agricultural economy also led to a period of social conflict between miners and the hacendados (large landowners) of the region, as the latter sought to maintain and extend their power. The infighting eventually ended with the resignation of President Isbell in 1899. The new century brought even more economic development, with Cochabamba becoming known as “the industrial province”. The introduction of the electric tramway in 1906 made it possible for workers to move to rural areas to work in factories. The city also became known for its vibrant and progressive artistic scene, featuring writers, artists, and poets. The city was unfortunately shaken by a powerful earthquake in 1998, leaving many buildings destroyed, and dozens of people hurt. However, since then, Cochabamba has nearly fully recovered and is back to its vibrant and historic state. You must visit one of these historical places in Bolivia on your Bolivia tour
