Palacio Portales, located in one of the most exclusive neighborhoods of La Paz, Bolivia, was the birthplace of President 1940-1943 and President 1947-1949 of Bolivia, Colonel Gualberto Villarroel López. The building was built in the late nineteenth century and was initially used as a luxurious town residence of Comandante Portales family. In 1933, Colonel Gualberto Villarroel acquired the property at the request of the dictator, Colonel Enrique Baldivieso. Colonel Gualberto used the building as his official residence during his presidency, and it continued to serve as the official residence of the president during the subsequent presidencies. In 1968, it was declared a National Heritage Site by the Bolivian government and, in 1989, it was declared a Historic Monument. Today, it is mostly used as a museum and open for the public to visit.
