History:

Plaza Aniceto Arce, located in the city of Sucre, Bolivia, was created in 1825, after the proclamation of Sucre as the new constitutional capital of the Republic of Bolivia. Aniceto Arce was a hero of the country’s freedom from Spanish rule. After the proclamation of Sucre as Bolivia's capital, it was decided to name the main square in the city “Plaza Aniceto Arce” in his honour. The purpose of this new public plaza was to act as the political and administrative headquarters of the country, containing many of the administrative buildings which are still located there today, such as the government palace, the city hall and the magnificently ornate Cathedral of the City of La Plata (ex Iglesia San Francisco). Throughout the years, the Plaza Aniceto Arce has expanded in size and became one of the most iconic public squares in Bolivia.
