History:
Chacaltaya Ski Resort in Bolivia is one of the oldest ski areas in South America and the highest in the world, located at an altitude of 5,421 m (17,785ft) in the Andes Mountains. In 1933, the original ski lift was erected at Chacaltaya with the help of the Guggenheim brothers. With the lift, it was possible to ski over 600 meters vertically, making Chacaltaya one of the first skiing areas in South America. At the time, the area was used mainly by the local Bolivian skiing community and a few adventurous climbers. In 1937, a Swiss-Bolivian company built a longer, higher-speed modern chairlift at the site. This lift was 600 meters long and ran at a speed of 40 kilometers (25 miles) per hour. This improved the experience of skiing at Chacaltaya, making it more popular with the locals and some international tourists. By the beginning of the 1990s, Chile and Argentina had developed some of the best ski resorts in South America and Chacaltaya began to lose its appeal. Over the years, the area was further degraded by the harsh winter weather, and the retreating glacier at the summit further limited its appeal as a skiing destination. In 2009, the area was declared an archaeological park, and the Bolivian Tourism Board began a project to rehabilitate the area. The project has included improved lift systems and infrastructure in the area, as well as conservation efforts to preserve wildlife and the unique landscape of the area. Today, Chacaltaya is still a popular destination with skiers and outdoor adventurers seeking a unique experience. It remains one of the highest skiing areas in the world and is a prime destination for ski touring and enjoying the picturesque views of Bolivia’s high altiplano.
