Evidence of people living and farming in the area have been found dating back to the pre-Columbian era. The name Huayna Potosí translates to "Young Potosí". Potosí was an old Inca city located in the area. The name was given to the mountain in colonial times because it was the most prominent peak in the area. In the early 1800s Huayna Potosí was used for recreational climbing, and the first recorded ascent was made in 1877 by an Englishman, Alfred Mercer. Numerous mountaineers have since attempted to ascend the peak, with great success.
