History:
Moxos is located in the Amazon region of the Beni Department in northern Bolivia. It is one of the nine provinces of the department and is the second largest province in Bolivia (covering 53,800 km2). The province was heavily populated and politically important in pre-colonial times, sited as it was between two major stations and settlements of the Moxos civilization and other indigenous peoples of the region. The Moxos civilization was an advanced political and religious civilization that flourished in the Beni region from approximately 800-1600 AD. Its cultural and political importance was based on its location near the middle of an extensive network of stations and settlements that served as economic and religious centers. In the 18th century, Moxos was part of the royal viceroyalty of New Granada (Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela). After the Spanish conquest of the area in 1795, the province was annexed to the Republic of Bolivia in 1825. In 1879, the province was reconquered by General Manuel Isidro Belzu and Moxos was renamed as Provincia de Moxos. The province initially enjoyed a certain amount of autonomy, although it eventually became a department of the Bolivian state. In 1954, the central government of Bolivia dissolved it and declared it a municipality. The Government of Bolivia returned some autonomy to the province in 1985, although full autonomy was not achieved until the 1999 constitutional referendum. Since then, Moxos Province has had its own elected governor, senators, congressmen and representatives in the regional government. Today, Moxos is primarily an agricultural region, and its economy is heavily dependent on crops such as maize, soybean, and cotton. It is also home to significant oil reserves, which have been exploited since the late 1970s. You must visit one of these historical places in Bolivia on your Bolivia tour
