History:

Cal Orck’o is a pre-Columbian archaeological site located in Bolivia near the city of Sucre. The site, which dates to around 1000 AD, was first discovered in 1937 by Bolivian archaeologist Juan de Dios Condarco. The site is located high on a bluff that overlooks the Jujuy River and features more than 700 structures, including 64 terraces carved out of the rock. It is believed that the site was the capital of a thriving pre-Hispanic community that lived in the area between 400BC and 600AD. The site consists of a large complex of terraces, plazas, stairways and platforms. Many of the structures feature elaborate artwork, including carved stone sculptures and ceramics. Several of these sculptures are of a double-headed serpent, which is thought to be associated with fertility and water.
