History:

Los Flamencos National Reserve is a protected area that was established in 1974 in the south of Uyuni department, in southwestern Bolivia. It occupies an area of over 3,000 hectares. The reserve is a haven for flamingos, hence the name Los Flamencos. In the reserve there are a variety of species of coastal and inland communities, including several species of birds (including flamingo species) and aquatic wildlife, such as vicuñas, lizards, vicuna llamas, capybaras, pumas, and deer. Bolivia formed the reserve to protect over 8,850 breeding pairs of Andean flamingos and 19,000 southern lapwing shorebirds. The reserve has since become a major attraction for ornithology enthusiasts, providing refuge to thousands of other species. Currently, its main objectives are to protect the ecosystems of the high Altiplano, promote scientific research, and foster conservation education. In 2002, the reserve was declared a Ramsar site, an intergovernmental convention with the goal of promoting conservation of important wetlands and natural habitats. That same year, the eco-region of Uyuni was established, designating the area as a eco-tourism site, while maintaining its biodiversity. Since then, stricter regulations have been put in place, such as controlling access to the national reserve and setting strict fishing laws.
