History:

Kila Goemba (or Kyi La Goemba) is an ancient Nyingma Buddhist monastery located in the Wangdue Phodrang District of Bhutan. It was founded by Minling Terchen Gyurme Dorje in 1688 and ranks among the oldest monasteries in the country. The monastery was originally established as a monastery of the Dorje Drak lineage of the Nyingma tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism. It was also a major center for the study of texts of the Nyingma lineage during the 17th century. The thirteenth Je Khenpo, Gyaltsab, who was known for his mastery of the Nyingma teachings, studied at Kila Goemba for many years before going to Paro. The monastery was also closely associated with the legendary Bhutanese lama and scholar, Pema Lingpa who served as the abbot of Kila Goemba from 1573-1585. Today, Kila Goemba is still active and serves as a major pilgrimage site for both Bhutanese and international devotees. It is home to approximately 60 monks who study and practice various forms of Buddhist teachings and is host to various Buddhist festivals throughout the year.
