Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten is located in Punakha District in Bhutan. The traditional form of worship practiced at this site is called Khorwa, which is a form of meditative prayer and ritualistic chanting. This type of worship involves reciting mantras and enacting circumambulations of the chorten, sometimes known as a ‘turning of the wheel’ prayer. The worshiper typically circles the chorten as many times as they feel inspired to do, repeating a mantra and offering visualizations to gain spiritual insight. After each turn, the worshiper bows in supplication to the deities enshrined within the chorten. Once the worshiper has completed the Khorwa, they will make three bow-like postures, known as the prostration of body, speech and mind, as an offering of respect and devotion to the divine. They will also offer incense, lighted butter lamps, and perform gestures of humility with their hands.
