History:

Actun Tunichil Muknal (“Cave of the Stone Sepulchre”) is a famous archaeological cave in Belize that was used for ritual purposes during the Late Classic Maya period (AD 5th-10th centuries). The site is renowned for its rich deposits of artefacts and human remains. The most famous discovery at the site is the Crystal Maiden Chamber, named after a female skeleton that was found among a number of pottery vessels, adorned with bead-mosaic jewellery and wearing a funeral shroud made from jade beads. The skeletal remains, along with other artefacts found in the chamber, suggest that it was used for a ritual sacrifice and burial. The site was first visited by Westerners in 1946 by Professor Raymond Garber of Yale University. However, it wasn’t until 1989 that archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology in Belize entered the cave, which was followed by a two-year project to excavate its contents. In 1994, the site was declared a National Monument of Belize, followed by its inscription on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List in 1998. Today the cave is a major tourist destination in Belize and is the country’s most popular archaeological attraction. Visitors are able to explore the cave and observe its intricate stone carvings, as well as the many artefacts and human remains that were discovered within it.
