History:

Actun Tunichil Muknal (“Cave of the Stone Sepulchre”) is a famous archaeological cave in Belize that was used for ritual purposes during the Late Classic Maya period (AD 5th-10th centuries). The site is renowned for its rich deposits of artefacts and human remains. The most famous discovery at the site is the Crystal Maiden Chamber, named after a female skeleton that was found among a number of pottery vessels, adorned with bead-mosaic jewellery and wearing a funeral shroud made from jade beads. The skeletal remains, along with other artefacts found in the chamber, suggest that it was used for a ritual sacrifice and burial. The site was first visited by Westerners in 1946 by Professor Raymond Garber of Yale University. However, it wasn’t until 1989 that archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology in Belize entered the cave, which was followed by a two-year project to excavate its contents. In 1994, the site was declared a National Monument of Belize, followed by its inscription on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List in 1998. Today the cave is a major tourist destination in Belize and is the country’s most popular archaeological attraction. The cave was discovered in 1989 and opened for guided tours in 1998. 3. Inside the cave is the Crystal Maiden Chamber, one of the most remarkable tourist attractions in Belize. 4. The Crystal Maiden Chamber was discovered in 1999 and is home to many mummies and skeletons. 5. The Crystal Maiden Chamber is named for the “Crystal Maiden”, a young girl believed to be around 12 years old when she died. 6. Her body has been transmuted from bone to calcium carbonate due to the water-laden environment in the cave, and she is covered in calcium carbonate which sparkles like crystals in the light. 7. Many other burials and artifacts are found throughout the cave, including pots, jade jewelry, chunks of ceramics and stone tools. 8. One particularly unique burial is known as the “Jaguar”, a man with a complete jaguar mask placed over his face. 9. Visitors to the cave can only enter with the guidance of a registered guide, and tour groups are limited to 12 people. 10.
