The ancient Maya city of Cuello is located in the Orange Walk district in Belize. It is notable for being one of the oldest sites in the Mayan Lowlands, with a long cultural history that spans several thousand years. The first archaeological evidence of Cuello dates back to around 1800 BC, making it one of the oldest sites in the region. Much of the earliest evidence comes from ceramics discovered in the nearby Nohmul complex. From about 500-800 BC, Cuello appears to have been an outpost of the Middle Preclassic cultures, as evidenced by large and elaborate grave offerings, including circular and platform shaped pyramids. Between 600-800 AD, Cuello was an important political and religious center. This was during the Classic Period of Maya civilization, and during this time the city became known for its extensive trade network, as well as its involvement in long-distance wars. By 1020 AD, Cuello was abandoned, as many Mayan cities were due to unknown causes. It remained largely undisturbed until the 1970s, when it was rediscovered by British archaeologists. The researchers found many ceremonial structures, residences, and tombs, which yielded invaluable insight into the lives of the ancient Maya.
