Kostol Vozneseniya Svyatoy Devy Marii In Belarus: History,Facts, & Services

Kostol Vozneseniya Svyatoy Devy Marii, translated as the Ascension Church of the Holy Virgin Mary, is a Russian Orthodox Church located in the city of Nizhny Novgorod in Russia. This church is considered to be a masterpiece of Russian Orthodox medieval architecture. It was built in the 15th century by Reverend Sergius, a monk of the Trinity-St. Sergius Monastery. The church is a five-domed monument of classicism and its exterior is decorated with different ornamentations. The church’s history can be traced back to the reign of Ivan the Great, the Grand Prince of Moscow and the first Tsar of Russia. Ivan the Great ordered the construction of the church in 1463 as a gift to Sergius. The church was completed in 1468 and was built in accordance with the design of the Kiev Golden Gate, with five gilt domes and a large central dome. The church has undergone numerous renovations throughout its history, and the interior decorations were changed several times. In the 18th century, the main frescoes were replaced with new ones and the wooden carving was redone. In the 1950s, the gold-plating of the domes and crosses was removed, resulting in the domes losing their original color. Today, Kostol Vozneseniya Svyatoy Devy Marii is a functioning church and one of the central attractions of the city. The services held in the church are open to the public, and there are many beautiful frescoes, icons and wall paintings inside. There are also lectures and exhibitions on the history of the church, which help visitors to learn more about its fascinating past.
