History:
Kobrin Castle, also known as the Brest Castle, is a medieval castle located in the town of Kobrin in western Belarus. It was built in the 15th century and is the oldest surviving castle in the country. The castle is believed to have been founded by Prince Yuri Koriatovich in 1478 and was used to guard the entrance of Kobrin into the Principality of Polotsk, one of the closest Duchy states to Belarus during this time. The castle served as a strategic defensive point during various wars and battles throughout its history, most notably in 1590 when it was besieged by the forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania under the leadership of Grand Duke Symon Batory. The castle was eventually taken by Batory's forces and become part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until 1660 when it was transferred to Imperial Russia as part of the Truce of Andrusovo treaty. For much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the castle was used as a regional garrison and became one of the most important fortifications of the Russian Empire’s northern border. In 1831, the fortress was captured by the forces of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The castle was badly damaged in a siege between the Poles and the Russians in 1872 and was subsequently abandoned. The castle was restored in the early 20th century and is now a national historical and cultural monument. Today, it serves as an important educational centre, hosting various events throughout the year, as well as a popular tourist attraction.
