History:

Komsomolskaya Square (or Komsomolskaja Square, in Russian and Belarusian) is located in the central part of Minsk, Belarus, pretty close to the central railway station. The square is one of the main city squares, it is often used for events such as music festivals and parades. The square has a long and interesting history. It was originally designed in the late 19th century and was called Alexander Square at the time. Named in honour of tsar Alexander III of Russia, the square was located at the crossroads of St. Petersburg and Vitebsk railway lines. It connected the centre of the city with a trade route. In the early Soviet era, the Soviet government decided to commemorate the October Revolution and the creation of the Red Army in 1918. To do so, the square was renamed Komsomolskaya Square in honour of Komsomol, the Soviet youth revolutionary organization. In 1933, a major remodel of the square took place. The square was reshaped and repurposed to accommodate the growing needs of the city. The building of the Belarusian State Printing House and the Belarusian State Circus were constructed around the square. Today, Komsomolskaya Square is used for a variety of activities. Many events, such as parades and music festivals, are regularly held here. The square also has some beautiful artwork including sculptures and fountains.
