Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of the Merciful Jesus is a cathedral located in Czestochowa, Poland. It is dedicated to the Merciful Jesus, the ailing figure in the paintings of the renowned Polish artist Juliusz Kossak. The Cathedral is the spiritual centre of Poland's most revered Marian shrine, the Jasna Gora Monastery. The building was designed by renowned Polish architect Tomasz Pryliński and constructed between 1968-1973. History The Roman Catholic Cathedral Church of the Merciful Jesus was built in tribute to the miraculous painting of the Merciful Jesus at the Jasna Gora Monastery, which was painted by the renowned Polish artist Juliusz Kossak. The painting has become a symbol of faith for many Poles, who have been visiting it for hundreds of years in hope for healing, strength and solace. The Cathedral has become a place of pilgrimages for many Polish Catholics, and is often regarded as the nation's spiritual heart. Facts • The Cathedral is 63 metres long, with a width of 24 metres at the front and 32 metres at the back. • The entrance to the cathedral is designed with three statues, namely Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint John Paul II. • The central part of the Cathedral is marked by a cross – the symbol of redemption and holiness. • The Altar is composed of 11 marble pieces, symbolising the 11 apostles of Jesus. • There are several ancient monuments found inside the Cathedral, dating back to the XVI century. Services The Cathedral offers a variety of services, like Sunday Masses, language instruction, religious service, pilgrim’s dormitory, souvenir shop and café. The Cathedral also organizes special events, like concerts, workshops and conferences. In order to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the painter Juliusz Kossak’s life, the Cathedral organizes various festivities, such as the Annual Candle Procession or the Annual Debut Of The Painting Procession.
