Hrodna Castle, also known as Lida Castle, is a fortified castle located in the city of Hrodna in northwest Belarus. According to legend, the castle was founded in 1022 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise and served as an important residence and fortress for local rulers. The castle was originally known as Kambarka Castle, and it was part of a defensive system on the eastern border of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It became systematically fortified beginning in the 15th century and was strengthened with new buildings and fortifications in the first half of the 17th century. In the mid-17th century, the castle was captured by Swedish forces and the city of Hrodna came under their rule. The castle was used as a military base and fortress until the Swedish withdrew in 1709. The castle was then captured by the Russian army and later became a residence of Russian governors. During the Napoleonic War, the castle once again became a military base and was besieged by French forces in June 1812. After the French forces were defeated, the castle was repaired and restored and transformed into an artillery barracks. In the mid-19th century, the castle was yet again transformed and was used for military exercises. During the First World War, the castle was used as an armory for the Tsarist army.
