Upper City, located in the modern city of Hrodna, Belarus, has a rich and diverse history dating back to the 11th century. The earliest documented settlement in the area, known as Grodno (Grand Ducal), was established in 1005. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth controlled the area during much of its history. The name Grodno was officially changed to Hrodna in 1835, and the city flourished throughout the 19th century, becoming a major center of industry, trade, and business. In the late 19th century, Hrodna was home to a large and diverse population, including Jews, Poles, Ruthenians, and Russians, among others.
