History:

The National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus is located in Minsk, the capital city of Belarus. Its history dates back to the mid-19th century when the first opera house opened in the city in 1855. The Imperial Theatre was founded in 1872 and this was followed by the construction of the Municipal Opera and Ballet Theatre in 1895. This was Belarus’ first truly national opera and ballet theatre and it hosted a wide range of performances as well as serving as a school for young performers. However, the theatre suffered extensive damage during the Second World War, and was completely destroyed by the end of it. In 1947 it was re-opened as the Belarusian People’s Theatre and operated as such until 1955 when it re-opened as the Minsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. In 1966, the theatre was given the highest title of National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre of Belarus and it has since been recognised as one of the finest performing arts centres in the nation.
