History:

Mir Castle is a former residential castle in Belarus, located 86 km southwest of Minsk, and was designated by UNESCO as a world heritage site in 2000. The castle was first mentioned in written sources in 1445, when the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vitovt, gave it to his servant, Ilya Koriatovich, for his distinguished service. Over the following centuries, the Mir Castle complex was enlarged and renovated several times, and eventually was transformed into a grand palace complex. The castle was occupied by Polish forces from 1568, and frequently changed hands during the wars that followed, before it was ultimately annexed by the Russian Empire in 1793. In the 19th century, the castle was the home of the rich and noted Potocki family, who undertook several extensive renovations during their ownership. However, the castle soon fell to neglect, and by the beginning of the 20th century much of the complex was in disrepair. It did not receive much attention until it was declared a national monument in 1965. It was restored in the 1980s and 90s, and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000 for its outstanding monument of Eastern European Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Since then, the castle has become a popular tourist destination in Belarus, and its importance has been recognized as a symbol of the nation's identity.
