History:
Francysk Skaryna Avenue in Minsk is the main avenue in the Belarusian capital. It is one of the oldest streets in the city and is named after the 16th century Belarusian polymath, Francysk Skaryna. The street was first laid in the 16th century during the reign of the Grand Duke of Lithuania and the King of Poland, Sigismund III Vasa and has been polluted with many changes throughout its long history. Originally, the street was located on the outskirts of the city and served as a military path leading to the borders of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its proximity to the border meant that the avenue was mainly used by the military, although it was also used for trade. The avenue was also a popular place for cultural events, such as plays or concerts. In the 19th century, the street was widened and reconstructed to become a central Minsk thoroughfare. New buildings were constructed on both sides of the street, including several industrial plants, banks, and insurance companies. The avenue also became a popular marketplace for food and other goods. In 1952, the street was renamed to Francysk Skaryna Avenue in honour of the 16th-century icon of Belarusian culture. After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the avenue was used to mark important occasions and national holidays, such as Victory Day and the Independence Day. Today, Francysk Skaryna Avenue is a central location in Minsk, with many shops, bars, restaurants, and other entertainment outlets along its length. The street is a vital hub of the city and an important symbol for the people of Belarus. Visit one of the famous monuments of Belarus with your friends and family.
