History:
Lida Castle is a 16th-century castle in Lida in Belarus. It was erected sometime between 1530-1550 and served as a fortification for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania against then rising powers in the region such as Poland and the Ottoman Empire. In 1582, Lida Castle was captured by Polish forces and was gradually modernized and expanded. In 1621, the castle was damaged by a large fire but was rebuilt in 1650 by Stanislav Chlebos. During the late 17th century, the castle was badly damaged again during the Great Northern War, and it took several years to repair. In 1793, the castle was annexed by the Russian Empire. The castle was significantly damaged during the 18th and 19th centuries, although some parts of it were restored in 1880. During World War II, the castle was badly damaged by Nazi bombing. After the war, it was restored as a museum featuring its original medieval architecture. It is today a popular tourist destination in Belarus.
