The Great Patriotic War Museum in Minsk was established in 1944 soon after the liberation of Minsk from German occupation. The museum was originally located in the former Red Barracks, also known as the “House of Peace”, until 1958 when it moved to its current location on the Karl Marx Avenue. The museum’s exhibits of their war experiences include documentation of partisan activity, deportation of Soviet citizens to Germany for forced labour, and destruction caused by the Nazis. They also showcase monuments, sculptures, photographs, documents and numerous portraits. Trauma artwork by Belarusian soldiers and civilians who experienced the war is honoured in the exhibition “Life in War: People’s Memory”. This exhibition presents stories of sacrifice, courage and gratitude.
