History:

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Minsk was initially founded by Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas in the 14th century. The church was later developed by King Sigismund Augustus in honor of his father Sigismund I the Old, who was buried in this cathedral in 1548. The church was restored in Baroque style in the 17th century and its interior was decorated with valuable works of art. In the 19th century, St. Peter and Paul Cathedral was destroyed and later rebuilt in neo-Byzantine style. It was during this period that the cathedral was decorated with marble, mosaics, and stained-glass windows. In the early 20th century, the cathedral was officially closed by Soviet authorities and used for storage. In a short period of time it almost completely destroyed. After the fall of the Soviet Union, St. Peter and Paul Cathedral was reopened in 1995. A sculptural composition of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas, a copy of the one that was destroyed by the Soviets, was installed in front of the cathedral. The main restoration of the cathedral was completed in 1997, preserving much of its original architecture. Today, St. Peter and Paul Cathedral is one of the most important and beautiful religious sites in Minsk and serves as the main seat of the Catholic Diocese.
