Tserkov' Ioann Predtecha is an Orthodox Church located in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia. Built in 1704, it is one of the oldest churches in the city and is still an active religious center today. It is located near the Fontanka River, just a few blocks from Nevsky Prospekt. The church was dedicated to Saint John the Forerunner, also known as John the Baptizer and is often referred to simply as “St. John’s” or “Ioann Predtecha”. History Tserkov' Ioann Predtecha was built in 1704, during the rule of Peter the Great. After the Tsar\'s death in 1725 it was one of the churches granted the privilege of celebrating a memorial service in his honor. The original wooden structure was replaced in 1776 with a stone building and an attached bell tower. Facts The church is built in the Baroque style, with an arched bell tower, which is topped by an onion-shaped dome with a gilded cross. Inside the church are several spectacular, intricately decorated iconostases. Many of the original church icons date to the 18th century, with some even older. The church has over 30 different icons, most of which are more than 200 years old. Services Tserkov' Ioann Predtecha continues to provide religious services on a regular basis. It offers several weekly services, such as Evening Prayer, Prayers for the Departed, and Sunday Divine Liturgy. It also offers Sunday School and special services for holidays throughout the year.
