Brief History:

The Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It was built in 1676 during the rule of Subahdar Shaista Khan, the Mughal Subahdar of Bengal. The mosque was named after Khan Mohammad Mridha, the son of Shaista Khan and the founder of Muradnagar. It is said that Khan Mohammad Mridha himself was a devoted Muslim and a great patron of the arts and culture of Bengal. Since then, the Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque has been an integral part of Dhaka’s religious and cultural heritage. The mosque complex consists of two separate structures. The main mosque itself is a single storey brick building with three domes and the other structure is a three-storied portico-lined pond. Inside the main building, there are two sanctums, one for the Friday prayers and the other for the necessary ablutions. The sanctums are separated by intricately carved columns and an arch-shaped mihrab, where the imam leads the prayers. The main dome of the mosque is decorated with intricate inscriptions in Arabic and Persian, and is supported by five arches. The mosque is built in typical Mughal architecture, and blends perfectly with the surrounding environment. The spacious compound of the mosque consists of a garden and flower beds. An open terrace is also present for visitors. Apart from being a beautiful architectural monument, the Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque is also a place for social gatherings and religious activities. Devotees throng the mosque during the two Eid celebrations and on special days like Ramadan and Ashura. The Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque in Dhaka is an architectural marvel. Built in 1809, the exquisitely designed mosque features stunning Islamic influences from the Mughal, Bengal and Mogul styles. The facade of the building is adorned with intricate geometric patterns and the inside consists of the hall flanked by two minarets. The hall is divided into seven bays, each with two pillars, and decorated with Arabic inscriptions and plaster work of Islamic floral patterns. At the rear of the hall is a small museum displaying ancient manuscripts and metal artifacts. The mosque also features an open air terrace, known as the mehrab, for worshipers to offer their prayers. Constructed with a combination of brick masonry and tropical stone masonry, the Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque stands as one of the most beautiful examples of Islamic architecture in Dhaka.
