Brief History:

The mosque is located near the junction of the rivers Jamuna and the Teesta in the Sundaraganj. It is believed to have been built by the famous saint Daud Bhat who established the first mosque in Bengal in 15th century. According to the local legend, it is believed that the holy Quran was brought to the mosque by a mysterious messenger sent by the ruler of the Sultanate of Bengal during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah. The mosque is constructed mainly in brick and is decorated with stucco work and some remarkable carvings. It is also believed to have been a significant center of activities for traders from Central Asia since the 15th century. The mosque has great religious and historical significance for the Muslims of Bangladesh and it attracts many tourists each year. The building is three stories high, and is built in a typical Mughal architectural style with three entry gates. The exterior walls feature a intricate geometric design. The mosque has four minars topped by traditional onion-shaped cupolas, with a central, hemispherical dome in the middle. Inside, the mosque is divided into two large halls, a spacious central prayer hall and a smaller side hall. The floor is laid with stone tiles, and the walls feature fine stucco decorations. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
