Brief History:

is located in the north-east of Bangladesh in Habiganj district of Sylhet division. It is one of the oldest mosques in Bangladesh. It is believed to have been constructed during the reigns of Sultan Abu Bakr and Sultan Sikandar (15th century), although the exact time of construction is not known. It is a protected monument by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Bangladesh. The mosque is built in the traditional style, of which, its two large entrance gateways and the two octagonal towers at the northeast and southeast corners are worth mentioning. The two structures, on both further sides of the entrance gateways, are said to be originally planned as a tower or a small minaret. The interior of the mosque has two mihrabs, which are one of its most attractive features due to its intricately carved in stone lattice decorations with various floral and geometrical designs around them. Other features of the mosque include five masonry domes, three wooden domes and four buttresses. Its large prayer hall has an eastern and western balcony with ornamental stone screens of varied intricate design, surrounded by twelve black stone pillars. The mosque is visited by a large number of people from both near and far places. It still holds regular Friday prayer meetings and namaz services. The Baniachong Jame Mosque is a historical and sacred mosque located in Habiganj District of Bangladesh. Constructed in 16th century, it is one of the oldest mosques in this region of Bangladesh. It is known for its unique and elegant architectural style. The mosque is built in Bengal-style architectural tradition and is made from burnt bricks which were commonly used in Hindu and North Indian Muslim architectural works in the region. The mosque consists of a single square prayer hall with a chamber on each side. It had 4 large minarates at the corners. The main mosque has three arched portals adorned with terracotta and stone carvings, and each entry is divided up in three vertical divisions. The interior walls of the mosque have typical border designs of Islamic art which are composed of elegant patterns of symmetric floral motifs. The timber roof structure is supported by 20 square pillars with ornamental capital bases. The walls of the mosque are embellished with terracotta panels depicting images of mango and lotus motifs, floral and geometrical designs, scenes from the life of the Prophet Muhammad, calligraphy, and the names of the Prophet, his family and companions. The mosque has a large prayer hall which can accommodate up to 3000 people. It has a seperate chamber for imam to lead the prayer. The area of the mosque is surrounded by lush green gardens with tall shade trees, and a large clear-water pond. This attracts visitors and worshippers to the site. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
