Kanaighat Jame Mosque is a historic mosque located in the Kanaighat Upazila of Sylhet, Bangladesh. It was built during the early 17th century and is one of the most famous mosques in Bangladesh. The mosque is said to have been built by a Mughal Governor, Mir Munshi Ali, who was the ruler of Kanaighat. The mosque is built according to the typical Mughal architecture of that era, with an octagonal design and a central double story tower (Shikka). The main entrance is made of two massive sandstone doors and terracotta decorations. Inside the mosque there are five large domes, two of which are located in the middle and the remaining three at the corners of the mosque. The walls of the mosque are made of bricks, while the ceiling is made of decorated plaster. The main chamber of the mosque is divided into two parts – the north and south side. The north side is larger and houses the ‘mihrab’ (a niche in the wall of a Mosque) and the main prayer area. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
