Kaliakair Jame Mosque is a beautiful and historical mosque in the Gazipur district of Bangladesh. It was built in the 17th century by the Mughal rulers and is considered to be one of the most notable examples of Mughal architecture in Bangladesh. The mosque is classified into three divisions – interior, where prayer, meditation and religious ceremonies are held; central, which consists of a large central hall; and exterior parts, which includes the architecture of the outer walls and towers. The interior of the mosque consists of two floors – the upper floor for prayer and the lower floor for Quran recitation and lectures. The upper floor is surrounded by four huge, ornate arches that provide a grandeur look to the structure. On this floor, there are several alcoves and balconies for observing the worshippers as well as four impressive domes. The lower floor is surrounded by a mosque court yard and has two stories, the lower one holds rooms for meetings and lectures. The iconic outstanding architecture of the mosque is the three large domes that are placed on its top. These domes are made of terracotta, and their surfaces are decorated with blue, green and white glazed tiles. These domes are surrounded by eight towering spires that represent the eight elements of Islam. The spires give an excellent view of the countryside around and it is believed that by looking at the spires, the Mughals had the excellent vision of unifying their kingdom. The exterior of the mosque has a large triple-gate entrance, which is ornately decorated with Islamic calligraphy and intricate designs. On either side of the gate, there are two large minarets that are built in traditional Bangladeshi style of architecture. The minarets are crowned with four towers on top and decorated with Arabic scripts. This mosque was built to symbolize the unity of Mughal social life and Islam.
