History:
Qal’at al-Bahrain is a historical site in Manama, the capital and largest city of Bahrain. Located on a small island overlooking the harbor, it is one of the oldest fortifications in the Gulf region, with evidence of construction from around 900 BCE. It served as both a defensive structure and a palace for Bahraini rulers up until the 19th century. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, and contains the remains of seven urban settlements, one of which dates back to the mid-third millennium BCE. This settlement is believed to have initially served as a small port, and artifacts from this period include pottery and metalwork. Throughout the centuries, the fort underwent numerous renovations and alterations as the rulers of Bahrain changed. Major additions were made during the early Islamic periods, and then again during the 18th and 19th centuries, when a two- rampart wall was added and a rotating watchtower was erected on a hilltop in the center of the fort. Despite the extensive alterations, Qal’at al-Bahrain still contains the remains of many historical structures, such as mosques, bath houses, and mausolea. Of particular note are two fortresses: a 12th century limestone fort and a smaller 18th century fort, both of which provided defenses against internal and external threats. Today, Qal’at al-Bahrain is one of Bahrain’s main tourist attractions and is open to visitors. Visitors can take guided tours of the fort and learn about its history and significance. The site also serves as a reminder of Bahrain’s long history and culture, dating back thousands of years. Visit one of the famous monuments of Bahrain with your friends and family.
