History:

The history of Al Dar Island dates back to pre-Islamic times when it was used by the ancient Dilmun civilization. During the Islamic period, the island was a point of commerce and pilgrimage to The Grand Mosque of Bahrain. Al Dar Island was also used as a base of operations by the Portuguese during the 16th century when they established a fort on the island which would ultimately be destroyed by the Omani Commander Bani Utbah. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the island served as an important trading center for pearl diving and other economic activities in Bahrain. It was also used as a refuge for Christian families fleeing persecution from the Persian Empire, and it was a refuge for Saudis fleeing from the attacking forces of Umar bin Sa’eed Ibn D’hail during the mid–19th century. During World War I, the British established a naval base in Sitra, which included the establishment of a large ammunition depot on Al Dar Island. The island has also been used by the Royal Navy throughout the 20th century, particularly during the Second World War. Since Bahrain’s independence in 1971, Sitra has emerged as an important financial and industrial hub of Bahrain and Al Dar Island has become a popular leisure destination for locals and expats alike. In 2017, the Bahraini government announced plans to further develop Al Dar Island, including the construction of a marina, a golf course and a range of residential buildings.
