History:

Gulustan Palace is located on the outskirts of Baku, Azerbaijan. It was built in the early 19th century by Ahmad Khan Shushinski, an influential Azerbaijani noble. It served as a summer residence and was a popular gathering place for local dignitaries and royals. The luxurious palace contained a large hall, flanked on both sides by a baar (a type of windcatcher used to cool air in the summer) and murrashin (arched cooling tower), and also a winter hall, tea room, and courtyard. It was outfitted with intricate woodwork, velvet and silk fabrics, as well as certain decorations and carpets used to ornament the walls and floor, and a grand entrance with large pillars. In 1921, the palace served as the home of the first Azerbaijani President, Ahmetbey Mirjanov. President Mirjanov used the palace as a site to receive foreign state guests and members of his cabinet for important meetings. The palace also hosted the coronation of the first Shah of the Republic of Azerbaijan at the end of June, 1921. Over the decades, Gulustan Palace has gone through some renovations, but still retains much of its original appearance. The palace is now a museum and is open to the public.
