History:
Fountains Square is one of the main public squares in the city of Baku, located in the heart of the city. It is a popular resting place, meeting place and centre of tourist activity with a long and storied history. The square has been the site of many important cultural and political events over the years. Fountains Square dates back to the late 19th century when the wealthy oil barons of Baku began to have their residences built around the square. By 1911 the perimeter of the square was lined with households. One of the most notable buildings was the Turk Bank Building which was built during 1907-09 and still stands today. A large fountain was constructed to serve as the centerpiece of the square in 1925. In Soviet times, the square was renamed Torgovaya Ploshchad (Market Place), a name it had from 1925-1991, and was the site of several Soviet era parades, rallies and events. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the square was renovated with new cobblestone streets and fountains. Today, the square is a bustling center of activity. There are a number of cafes and restaurants, as well as monuments of historical figures and important events.
