It was built in 1780 by the mayor of Baku, Hussein Quli Khan, for his father, Sheikh Mohammad bin Ali, who was a Sufi Sheikh from Karabakh. The mosque has two minarets, a large dome and intricate interior decorations. The mosque was repaired and renovated several times due to earthquakes and changes in the city and it was recently restored in 2018. In 2017, it was inscribed on the List of Monuments of National Importance of Azerbaijan. It is one of the most famous mosque in Azerbaijan which you must visit.

The Shikhmahammad Mosque is an ancient mosque located in Sheki, Azerbaijan, an area that is currently part of Sheki Khans’ historical-architectural reserve. It was built in the 18th century. The building has a distinctive, octagonal shape, a feature which is unusual for a mosque. Its exterior is remarkably ornate, with an elaborately decorated façade, consisting of intertwining geometric and floral motifs. Its walls are also decorated with impressive blue tiles. Inside, the interior features a spacious hall for prayer, with five domes, and a tall minaret that offers fine views of the nearby countryside. The mosque also includes a variety of other rooms and chambers, such as a madrasa (seminary) and a library. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

Public transportation is also available with buses departing from Baku's Icheri Sheher bus station directly to Sheki. Visitors can then take a taxi or public transportation from Sheki to the mosque. The Shikhmahammad Mosque is open daily from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, with the exception of Mondays when it closes at 3:00 pm. Entry is free, but visitors are asked to dress modestly.
