Parish Church of the Holy Blood In Austria: History,Facts, & Services

The Parish Church of the Holy Blood is located in Bruges, Belgium. Built between the 12th-14th centuries, it is named for the relic of the Holy Blood, a precious vessel said to contain a sample of Jesus Christ’s blood collected by Joseph of Arimathea. The church is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its architecture reflects the Romanesque style typical of the region. History The exact origins of the Parish Church of the Holy Blood are unknown, but the earliest signs of a religious building on the site date back to the mid-11th century. By the 13th century, the church had become a center of pilgrimage and donations, leading to an expansion and reconstruction of the building. The most notable changes occurred in the early 14th century, when it was given the name of the Holy Blood and its interior was decorated with a sumptuous golden shrine to house the relic of the Holy Blood. Facts The church is one of the oldest, most sacred and best-preserved buildings of its kind in Belgium. The relic of the Holy Blood rests in a marble altar at the church’s altar, set against a backdrop of painted figures of saints and martyrs. Inside the church, there are also several 16th-century Flemish tapestries, which depict various miracles believed to have been performed by the holy blood. Services Today, the Parish Church of the Holy Blood is an active Roman Catholic church and it continues to hold mass and provide religious services to the community. Additionally, it offers tours of its interior and grounds, religious education and devotional events throughout the year.
