The city of Salzburg, Austria was home to one of the world's most renowned musical geniuses, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, for the first 25 years of his life. Although he spent much of his life elsewhere, his Salzburg roots provided inspiration, nourishment and support for his music. Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg was the Getreidegasse, an old and historic trading center in the city's Altstadt. At the time it when Mozart lived in Salzburg, Getreidegasse was lined with merchants and craftspeople that provided a lively backdrop for the growing musician. In 1756, Mozart's father, Leopold, began teaching him music, and soon Leopold recognized his son's amazing musical talents and began taking him to court performances. At the age of eighteen, Mozart moved to Vienna where he was later recognized as a master composer. During the next two decades, he completed some of his most famous works such as The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. However, Mozart returned frequently to Salzburg to visit family and continue to write music. Today, Salzburg honors its most famous son with The Mozarthaus, a museum that offers visitors a glimpse at the life of Mozart.
