Mechitaristenkirche is an Armenian Catholic religious complex and church located in Vienna, Austria. It was built by the Mechitarist Order, a congregation of Armenian Catholic monks, in 1817. It is a part of the Congregation of the Eastern Church of St. Mechitar. It is one of the best churches in Austria which you must visit.

History:

The Mechitaristenkirche was founded by Mechitar da Vanadzor (1676–1749), an Armenian monk who dedicated himself to the preservation of Armenian culture and language. The name of the church and the Order’s spiritual inclination was derived from the city of Vanadzor which was his birthplace. In 1811, the Mechitarists received the official approval of Emperor Francis I for the statue of Saint Mechitar to be placed in the church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Austria.

Today, the complex includes a library, a museum, four cloisters, and a bell tower. The bell tower, which was completed in 1819, is dedicated to Saint Peter. The interiors of the church are beautifully decorated with paintings and frescos by artists such as Johann Höllbronner and Alexander Heilmann.
