History:

Linz Hauptplatz is the main square of Linz, Austria. It is located in a part of the Old Town in the city's industrial heartland of the Southern Danube. The square has been the focus of activities and public events in Linz for centuries, and is considered one of the city's most important landmarks. The history of the square dates back to the 12th century, when the area was part of an open marketplace that served as an important trading centre for merchants travelling between Vienna and the rest of Austria and the surrounding region. It was known as the Fischmarkt or Fish Market, taking its name from the fresh fish sold at the stalls. The first recorded mention of the site dates to 1264, when it is mentioned in a document issued by Pope Urban IV. In 1572, the square was renamed Hauptplatz, possibly taking the name from the newly erected Erzherzog Johann fountain which is located in the centre of the square. The structure now stands tall in the centre of the square, surrounded by trees and other monuments. In 1696, a large metal statue was erected in the centre of Hauptplatz to commemorate the Battle of Brunn, which saw the Habsburgs vanquish the Ottomans at Linz in 1595. The monument was destroyed in 1758 during the War of Austrian Succession, and replaced in 1867 with a new one. Today, this monument remains in the centre of the square, surrounded by many other smaller statues and monuments. Hauptplatz is also the home of many of Linz's major annual events, including the annual Festival of Lights which takes place every summer. The Christmas Markets, held on the square during the festive season, attract visitors from all around the world. In recent years, the square has also become a popular location for outdoor concerts and other live events. Today, Hauptplatz remains a vibrant hub of activity in the city of Linz, and continues to serve as a key part of the city's history, culture and identity.
