History:

Frigate Island is a small, uninhabited island off the northwest coast of Antigua-and-Barbuda in the Caribbean. The island was given the name Frigate because of the frigates that used to inhabit its waters in the 17th and 18th centuries. The island served as a refuge for pirates and smugglers, and as a hideout for privateers, who sought to gain from the merchant trade in the West Indies. During the 17th century, the English attacked and occupied the island to prevent unsubdued piracy from the area. The island was then used as a base for Royal Navy patrol vessels and to protect English ships navigating the Caribbean from Spanish attacks. In 1827, the island was ceded to the United Kingdom by the United States under the provisions of the Treaty of Paris. The island was used to incarcerate Afro-Caribbean slaves for two years before their repatriation to Africa. In the 19th century, Frigate Island was a resort for the wealthy of Antigua-and-Barbuda. The island attracted the cream of Antiguan society: from royalty to statesmen, as well as wealthy plantation owners, merchants and high-ranking British service officers. Along with a hotel, there was also a casino and luxurious villas built on its shores. However, in the late 19th century, the resort fell out of favour due to the spread of yellow fever and other tropical diseases. The development of the harbour in St. John's in 1906 made Frigate Island redundant. Since then, its value had diminished considerably, along with its importance to the nation, until it was declared a national park in 1991. Despite its diminished status, the island retains its historic significance and remains a popular attraction for visitors to Antigua-and-Barbuda.
