History:

Spanish Point is a historic site located near the west coast of Antigua-and-Barbuda, about 10km north-west of the capital, St. John’s. The site is a reminder of the Spanish period in Antigua's history, when the Spanish first tried to establish a presence on the island in 1632. Spanish Point holds great historical significance due to its being the oldest fortification on Antigua-and-Barbuda. The original Spanish fortification was destroyed during the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 and later replaced by a second fort by the British in 1783. This fort was later renamed Fort James. The Spanish presence in Antigua lasted less than a hundred years, as the British captured the island in 1667. Even though the Spanish had left the island by then, they left a lasting mark on the country. Many of Antigua's historically significant sites, such as Spanish Point and Fort James, were originally built by the Spanish. Today, Spanish Point offers visitors a glimpse into Antigua's rich history.
